A Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) official, who has flown to England to provide live commentaries of the on-going cricket series, has been accused of producing forged documents and obtaining Rs. 2.5 million from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLBC).

The said official has made use of official letterheads of the SLBC Chairman, placed the chairman’s signature and corresponded with SLC and obtained money, Police said.

The official concerned had picked four others to accompany him to England as members of his media group. Before taking wing he had written to Duleep Mendis, the CEO of SLC, and asked for Rs. 3.9 million (39 lakhs) for coverage of matches and to provide information about the 2007 World Cup. Reportedly, the official had obtained Mendis’s reply letter and asked the CEO to pay Rs 2.5 million to a travel agency in Kollupitiya.

SLC had paid the said amount by cheque, it is learnt.

SLBC Chairman, Sunil Sarath Perera said that he has been informed of the alleged transaction and he has appointed a five-man committee to look into the matter.

Adel Hashim, Secretary, Cricket Interim Committee, however, said that this was a rumour spread by an interested party and the Interim Committee would shortly issue a statement clarifying the situation.
