Govt bound by IC guidelines – Kirialle

by Zacki Jabbar

The UNP yesterday called on the government to find a political solution to the ethnic conflict based on the Oslo Accord, Tokyo Declaration and Ceasefire Agreement.

Kandy District UNP MP Laksman Kirialle told a media briefing in Colombo that the European Union having banned the LTTE has sent a clear message to the Sri Lankan government that any solution to the ethnic conflict should be based on the Oslo Accord, Tokyo Declaration and Ceasefire Agreement.

"Now that the European Union has banned the LTTE the government cannot run away from its obligations. It has to find a political solution based on the guidelines set by the international community."

The UNP, he said would extend its fullest support to any solution to the ethnic conflict within a United Sri Lanka. "We hope the government puts forward a solution acceptable to the Co-Chairs and India."

Kirialle, said that the SLFP and JVP as usual criticise UNP policies while in the opposition but follow them while in power under the guise of various cooked up terminologies.

"When we sought international assistance to resolve the ethnic conflict the SLFP and JVP set the country on fire by calling us traitors .But now they have accepted foreign mediators ".

He, said if the IPKF was allowed to remain in the North –East for one more year they would have dealt effectively with the LTTE threat .

"The JVP and SLFP having caused chaos and destruction in its efforts to drive the IPKK away are now seeking Indian intervention. This is the sort of opportunistic policies that these two parties have practised right along at tremendous loss to the country", Kirialle said.
