Bhikku undergraduates, of the Buddhist and Pali
University, yesterday protested against the University
administration’s delay to punish corrupt officials. They named a
high ranking official and his assistant as corrupt.
"We informed the University administration and
the Education Ministry about this several times. The Ministry
took action to hold an inquiry, but, the University Senate is
trying to suppress it," President of the Student Union told The
Island yesterday.
"There are several new buildings, but all are
damaged due to substandard construction. A recently constructed
boundary wall is also damaged due to the contractor’s fault.
The responsibility of selecting this contractor
lies with the Registrar and Assistant Registrar of the
University," he said.
Vice Chancellor of the University Professor
Wegama Piyarathana Thera denies the Student Union’s allegations.
The inquiry will be held shortly, he said.
"We are not going to avoid the investigations
and inquiry. We tried to hold this inquiry earlier, but the
Student Union members had not come to give evidence on that day.
Now they are protesting against the University administration,"
Prof. Piyarathana Thera said.
