PARIS, May 30 (AFP) - Defending
champion Justine Henin-Hardenne staked her claim to a third
French Open title by advancing to the second round of Roland
Garros on Tuesday.
The Belgian fifth seed brushed aside Estonia’s Maret Ani 6-3,
6-0 in just under an hour to set up a meeting with either
American Jill Craybus or Belarussian Anastasiya Yakimova for a
place in the third round.
"It’s very emotional for me being back playing here on centre
court," said Henin-Hardenne.
"I’ve had highs and lows at Roland Garros and a lot of good
memories. I hope it’s going to continue like this."
Winner here in 2003 and 2005, Henin-Hardenne will be bidding
to become the eighth woman to win three French Open titles or
more.
The champion confidently wrapped up the first set in 32
minutes as her 24-year-old opponent struggled with her serve
hitting a total of eleven double faults in the tie.
