- Kandy Sports CorrespondentRadella was the venue
of an A Division rugby tournament match after a lapse of 31
years, when newcomers Dim-Dicks hosted Air Force in their Caltex
A Division Group (B) rugby tournament match last Saturday. Air
Force won 44-5.
Before the commencement of the match both teams were
introduced to the chief guest and Chairman, Singer Sri Lanka
Limited, Hemaka Amarasuriya. Singer Sri Lanka Limited is the
main sponsor of Dim-Dicks this year. Dimbulla last played A
Division rugby in 1974, while Dickoya gave up a few years
earlier. Incidentally, Dimbulla will be celebrating its 150th
anniversary this year.
It is indeed commendable that Singer Sri Lanka has come
forward to sponsor the game in the hills. They did the same to
Kandy Sports Club in the late 90s. Now Kandy Sports Club is the
League and Clifford Cup champions. Hemaka Amarasuriya is
confident that with the passage of time Dim-Dicks will follow
the winning trend of Kandy Sports Club.
When the Chairman - Rugby of the Dim-Dicks, former Trinity,
Up-country and Dickoya hooker Devaka Wickremasooriya was asked
about the club’s plans, he said that the committee has taken a
decision to work out a strategy towards making Dim-Dicks a force
to be reckoned with in local rugby. Talented players are
available in the district and once they attend practices, a
professional training programme will be conducted, with the
assistance of the Central Province Rugby Football Union.
The Secretary of the Central Province RFU, Iswan Omar said
that the Dim-Dicks, in their first outing, gave a good account
of themselves. The CPRFU will provide them with training and
technical know-how, he added.
