Royal College Colours Awards Ceremony 2005 held in grand style

The Royal College Colours Awards Ceremony for the year 2005 was held in grand style on May 17, 2006 at the Navarnagahala, recognizing the achievements of nearly 150 sportsmen representing 22 different sports who brought glory to Royal College.

The chief guest at the presentation ceremony was Major General. C. H. Fernando and the guest of honour was Dr. J. C. Fernando, both of whom are distinguished old boys of Royal College. The event was witnessed by former sportsmen, members of the faculty, parents and present sportsmen. The Colours Awards Ceremony was also able to motivate and inspire the next generation of sportsmen to try and emulate the deeds of their predecessors.

The Senior Prefects’ Council of Royal College had done a wonderful job of putting the ceremony together under the advice and guidance of the Principal, H. A. U. Gunasekara, Vice Principal, Prasanna Upashantha and the Senior Games Masters M. T. A. Rauf and S. S. Liyanagunawrdena.

As the list of trophies won by these fine Royalists sportsmen was read out, it was evident that the Royalists this year too have once again dominated the schools sports arena. More than 30 sportsmen who have represented Sri Lanka at international level were recognized at this event. In addition to the Coloursmen of the 22 sports, President Scouts, members of the Cadet Contingent and members of the Cadet Band were also recognized with Certificates of Merit.

The Maalyn Dias Sports Scholarships were awarded to Indika Wettasinghe, who had excelled in tennis and Marlon Senanayake who has been outstanding in hockey.

The prestigiouse ‘Royal Crown’ which is considered the highest honour a sportsman of Royal College can aspire to achieve, is awarded each year to sportsmen who have made an outstanding contribution to their sport.

This time, there were four recipients of this prestigious award. The Wickramasinghe brothers stole the limelight at this event by winning the ‘Royal Crown’ for their outstanding contributions in the field of tennis. It should be noted that it is the first ever occasion in the history of Royal College that two brothers have been awarded this rare honour.

Sasith Wickramasinghe, who is the current Head Prefect of ‘Royal College was awarded the Royal Crown’ for his outstanding contribution in the field of tennis. He has been a National School Games gold medallist from 2001-2004. He is one of the few Royalists who has had the rare honour of being awarded Western Province Colours, Colombo Zone Colours, Royal College Colours and National Colours in the same year. He has made 12 appearances in the international scene and has been a member of the Sri Lanka Davis Cup squad for three years from 2002-2004.

His brother Udith Wickramasinghe, was also awarded the ‘Royal Crown’ for tennis having won the bronze medal in the Asian School Games tournament and being runner-up in the doubles event at the ITF World Ranking Tennis Tournament. He has been a National School Games gold medallist in 2003 and 2004. He has also been a member of the Sri Lanka Davis Cup squad for 2005.

Arshad Sathuk, a Senior Prefect who was adjudged the Best Player at the R. L. Hayman Trophy was awarded the ‘Royal Crown’ for Water Polo. He was vice captain of the team which won the R. L. Hayman Trophy after 14 years. He also represented Sri Lanka at the World Water Polo Championships, held in Hong Kong.

Shamuditha Ishan was awarded the ‘Royal Crown’ for his contribution to TT. Shamuditha won the bronze medal at the Asian School Games and a silver medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships.
