Police sergeant arrested while
accepting bribe

A sergeant attached to the Moneragala
police was yesterday arrested around 1.45 p.m., by the
investigating officers of the Commission to Investigate
Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABC), in the act of
accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a person who has been tried
in the Moneragala Courts for possessing Gajamuthu.
According to SSP Neville Guruge,
Director Investigations CIABC, the suspect sergeant, attached to
the Crime branch of Moneragala police, had solicited Rs. 20,000
from the complainant promising that he would help him get
aquitted from the case by getting witnesses to give evidence in
his favour. The suspect had asked the complainant to pay him an
advance of Rs 10,000 and the balance after he was discharged.
The suspect, identified as J. M. Abeywickrama
Dissanayake was to be produced before the Moneragala Magistrate
late in the afternoon yesterday.
