cGALLE: Robbers had stolen two pillars
and a stone bed, from Thota Gamuwe Sri Rahula Thera’s Viharaya
recently.
Police said that two suspects, Gamini
Kusumatillake of Kahawe and Lokugamage Ranjith of Elpitiya were
taken into custody.
The police found the stolen items along with the
vehicle used to transport the items, hidden in an abandoned
house inTotagamuwa.
The present Nayaka Thera Ven. Dulangamuwe
Chandrara, had complained to the Elipitiya police regarding the
missing pillers and stone bed.
Sadbasha Parameshwere Totagumuwa Sri Ruhula
Thera, of the Kotte period used a stone bed in the cave he lived
close to the Viharaya.
The late Thera had consumed medicinal tonic just
before his demise and as such the Thera’s finger nails and hair
grew l even after his demise.
The Portuguese who invaded the coastal belt had
taken the Thera’s body to Goa in India in the year 1551,
presuming that it was the body of the Portuguese Priest Francis
Xavier.
When time passed, the four pillars, the bed and
the stone-door frame of the cave were shifted to another
Viharaya.
SSP Elpitiya, P. B. U. Ayupala and five police officers
instructed by HQI, O. K. T. Gunadasa produced the suspects
before the Elpitiya Magistrate Manoj Thalgodapitiya who ordered
them to be remanded for two weeks.
