Islanders take  three awards
Three journalists from The Island and the Sunday Island were honoured with Journalism Awards for Excellence at a ceremony on Tuesday.

Our design editor and cartoonist Jeffrey K. de Silva was adjudged Cartoonist of the Year by the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Press Institute; journalist Ifham Nizam received the award of Best Environmental Reporter of the Year; and Sunday Island assistant editor Namini Wijedasa was presented the D. R. Wijewardene Award for Earning the Appreciation of Peers and the Public.

Editor of the Morning Leader Sonali Samarasingha was named Mervyn de Silva Journalist of the Year. Krishni Ifham was named D. B. Dhanapala Best Journalist of the Year (Tamil language) and Dilrukshi Handunetti was awarded D. B. Dhanapala Best Journalist of the Year (English language). Dharisha Bastians was adjudged Denzil Peiris Young Reporter of the Year.

Lakruwan Wanniarachchi clinched the title of Photographer of the Year while the Daily Virakesari newspaper was deemed the Best Designed Newspaper of the Year. Lasantha Ruhunage was presented the Upali Wijewardena Feature Writer of the Year (Sinhala language) award, Jamila Najmuddin was presented the Upali Wijewardena Feature Writer of the Year (English language) and Arasaratnam Rajeevan was presented the Upali Wijewardena Feature Writer of the Year (Tamil language).

D. B. S. Jeyaraj was awarded the B. A. Siriwardena Columnist of the Year (English language) honour while P Mahendraraja was awarded the B. A. Siriwardena Columnist of the Year (Tamil language). D Charles Peters got the Subramaniyam Chettiar Social Development Reporter of the Year award and T. M. K. Samat was named Sports Journalist of the Year.

G. L. Ahamed Nifras was named Business Journalist of the Year (Tamil language), Ruwan Thilina Samarasingha was Business Journalist of the Year (Sinhala language) and Mandana Ismail Abeywickrama was Business Journalist of the Year (English language). Vincent Jeyam got the Prof K Kailasapathy Award for Reporting Under Special Circumstances.

There were no awards for Scoop of the Year or Best Journalist (Sinhala language). The Sepala Gunasena Award for Defending Press Freedom in Sri Lanka was also not presented.

Five distinguished senior journalists were presented gold medals for long service. They were W V Abeygunawardhana, Motagedara Wanigaratna, Hema Gunawardhana, Lesley Dahanayake and A. Sivanesaselvan.
