Thushara and Duminda take silver

Thushara Edirisinghe and Duminda Jayakody had to be content with silver, as the Indian duo of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas romped to a comprehensive 2-0 victory in the final of the Menís Double event in the Badminton Competition of the 10th South Asian Games, worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium, yesterday.

Sri Lanka won silver in team events when badminton was introduced at the last edition in Pakistan.

Thushara Edirisinghe and Duminda Jayakody who won silver yesterday will go down in history as the first Sri Lankan duo to win a silver medal in individual events.

While Sri Lankan shuttlers won a single silver medal and four bronze medals, India bagged five gold and four silver along with one bronze, yesterday.

Meanwhile, in the other all India finals played yesterday, the Womenís Doubles final was in the centre of attraction as it went into a third set after a tense second set. Gutta Jawal and Sarah Kurien who lost the first set, 21-18, came back fighting in the second set to beat Balan Aparna and B. R. Meenakshi 23-21.

But Jawal and Sarah won the third set and the gold.

Indiaís champion shuttler Chetan Anand clinched the gold medal beating his team-mate Nikkil Kanetkar 2-0 in the Menís Singles final, while Trupti Murugunde beat B. R. Meenakshi in the other all India Womenís Singles final.
