Muslim schoolgirls sing the countrys national song ‘Vande Mataram’ at The Anjuman-E-Islam High School in Ahmadabad, India, Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006. The centennial of India’s controversial national song Vande Mataram, which means in Hindi I bow to thee, mother, on Thursday sharply divided Hindu nationalists and Sikh and Muslim leaders after the federal government in August ordered the first two verses to be sung in schools to mark 100 years of its adoption as the country’s national song by the Indian National Congress on Sept. 7, 1906. Last month Muslim clerics asked their followers not to sing the song because Islamic law forbids them from bowing down to anyone or anything except Allah. (AP)

The people of the North and East have been experiencing violence, disappearances and extra-judicial killings over the last few months.
