SME 2006 exhibition was inaugurated yesterday in
enhancing the technological capabilities of small and medium
enterprises to emerge itself as an efficient and competitive
sector in the economy and prepare for the global markets.
This exhibition organized by the Federation of
Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL)
showcases various innovative machinery, accessories and services
of Sri Lankan and 14 Indian companies.
Chief Guest at the occasion Rural Industries and
Self Employment Promotion Minister S.B. Nawinna addressing the
exhibitors said: "The modern technology displayed at this
exhibition is very essential for SMEs. This technology is a must
in facing future competition while developing the product. The
Government policy stresses the need to promote small and medium
industries which is the backbone on national economy."
According to organizers, SME 2006 demonstrates
services offered by several research and development
organisations, Government agencies and companies with the
potential to offer sub-contracting opportunities.
"The theme opted for this exhibition;
'Technology for SME Sector' is very relevant and has become the
need of the hour. I believe that this machinery exhibition and
trade fair could be a turning point in the development of rural
economy," he said.
FCCISL President Nawaz Rajabdeen giving the
efforts made by the federation in helping the SME said: "We have
recognised the important role played by SMEs especially at the
provincial level for income and employment generation of the
country. The SME Machinery Fair 2006 is a project which benefits
our SMEs by way of exposing them with better technology and
know-how to improve the productivity."
"SME sector is the backbone of the nation's
economy. They are true sons of our soil, many of whom been
silently contributing to the socio economic development of the
country. This needs to be recognised so that SMEs will be
motivated and encouraged to achieve highest echelons of
corporate objectives. This is the fundamental objective of this
event," he added.
