The International Tolerance Day was
held a "Rheinau Park" in Bonn on 2 September 2006. The event is
being organised every year by the Mayor of Bonn to mark the
international tolerance. Sri Lanka Consulate in Bonn
participated in the International Tolerance Day this year too
enthusiastically.
In the year 1995, United Nations
declared its 50th anniversary as "International Year for
Tolerance". This declaration was made in view of the rising
extremism, racism, discrimination and intolerance. A world-wide
campaign for tolerance, non-violence, cultural pluralism, was
thus launched by the then UN Secretary General.
Tolerance Day is an opportunity to
assess the progress that has been made throughout the year in
the sphere of tolerance and what could be done in furtherance of
the cause of tolerance and also to create an awareness about the
importance of tolerance among different nations, cultures,
linguistic groups around the world.
The stall put-up by the Sri Lanka
Consulate attracted a large number of people. About 5000 people
visited the Sri Lankan stall. This included Germans, as well as
the other nationals and also Germans of Sri Lankan origin living
in Germany.
Sri Lankan stall was decorated
colourfully in different shades, shape and size of Sri Lankan
flags and with colourful posters of places of tourist
attractions in Sri Lanka and other items of Sri Lankan touch.
Tourist literature, maps and some books on Buddhist philosophy
and way of life were displayed and distributed among the
visitors.
Rice, traditional Sri Lankan dishes,
short-eats such as wade, sherbert were selling like hot cake.
Freshly brewed Sri Lankan tea was made available by way of tea
promotion.
The centre of attraction was the Kottu
Roti parlour at the Sri Lankan stall. The rhythmic tone produced
in the process of preparation of Kottu Roti drew exceptionally a
large crowd to the Sri Lanka stall. An officer from the
Consulate dressed up in kandyan saree carried the Sri Lanka flag
and appeared on the stage depicting richness and diversity of
Sri Lankan culture together with the other nationals from other
countries.
