- Court
suspends CMC order
The Court of Appeal yesterday suspended a
decision taken by the District Engineer, Colombo Municipal
Council, to demolish buildings constructed on the pavements, in
Colombo 15, within seven days from August 26, 2006. The court
issued notice on the Colombo Municipal Commissioner and the
District Engineer to be present in Court on September 22, 2006,
in respect of a petition filed by eight persons, who had
constructed trade stalls, along the pavements, in Sirimavo
Bandaranaike Mawatha, Colombo 15.

Children hurt
in LTTE mine attack
A claymore mine blast wounded a police officer
and six civilians in Vavuniya yesterday. The mine exploded
around 7.00 a.m. near a three-wheeler at Vavuniya where the body
of a civilian was found, a senior police officer said.

Poland: The Terrible Twins
"I am afraid that with Jaroslaw Kaczynski as
prime minister, Poland will become more extreme, more
anti-European and a more xenophobic country," warned Bronislaw
Komorowski, a member of the opposition Civic Platform party,
when the second Kaczynski twin was made prime minister by his
brother, President Lech Kaczinski, in July. He could have added
that Poland is becoming more anti-Semitic, more homophobic, and
much more vengeful towards former Communists and collaborators.

Against the backdrop of renewed conflict, which
has newly displaced more than 200,000 people in the North and
East of the country, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC)
country team in Sri Lanka launched a Common Humanitarian Action
Plan (CHAP) requiring US $37.5 million for urgent relief from
September to December 2006.

ICC set dates
for Inzamam hearing
KARACHI (Reuters) - Pakistan captain
Inzamam-ul-Haq’s disciplinary hearing over last month’s ball
tampering row at the Oval will be held in London on September 27
and 28, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on
