City Coroner Edward Ahangama who held the
inquest into the death of two persons due to a road accident on
Thursday (7) ordered the four-wheel drive vehicle involved in
the accident to be examined by the Examiner of Motor Vehicles
and the suspect driver, Ukwathage Buddika Chaminda Perera,
warded in the hospital, to be produced at the next inquest date
on October 6.
The deceased were identified as Hapanpeligedara
Premaratne (54) and Manivelu Mariappan (25) of Agarapatana.
Giving evidence at the inquest, witness Dilum
Lalantha Amaradivakara said that on the day of the incident
about 2.30 pm, six persons were in the Jeep which was travelling
from Bambalapitiya towards Wellawatte. Witness said that he
observed the driver holding on to the steering wheel of the
speeding vehicle in a bid to gain control. But the vehicle lost
control, witness added.
As a result, several passengers including the
witness were thrown off, he said. The mishap caused two deaths
and in addition five persons sustained injuries, he said.
