Kandy: Pesident Mahinda Rajapakse protected the livelihood of nearly 50,000 farmers by taking appropriate action in the Mavil Aru Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Parliamentary group leader Ven. Puravidya Chakravarthi Ellawala Medhananda Nayake Thero said in Kandy on Tuesday (12).

He was speaking at the presentation of electronic security division to three schools in Kandy by the Kandy District JHU Parliamentarian Ven. Udawatte Nanda Thero.

Ven. Medhananda Thero said President Rajapakse resorted to the correct action to fulfil his duty by the people and his motherland at a moment of crisis that challenged the territorial integrity of the country.

Certain sectors critical of the Sangha say that the Sangha should not advocate war and that the Sangha should meditate, but it should be understood that there should a land available in which to meditate, the prelate Thero said.

It is the duty and responsibility of the older generation in particular the leaders to safeguard and protect the lives of the younger generation. The younger generation of the day will be the caretakers of the land and the race in the future. The children should be given proper education on the culture and history of their race.

History should compulsorily be a subject in school. Patriotism grows with the knowledge of the history of the land.

The Sinhala people do not have any grudge against the Tamils in Sri Lanka. There is no necessarily to destroy the Tamils. People are against terrorism only.

Terrorism must be crushed at any cost the prelate said. All communities should live in harmony.

Kandy District MP Ven. Udawatte Nanda Thero said that security equipment was provided to schools with the hope of protecting school children from any infiltration of harmful elements.

Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha JHU member Thushara Swarnatilake and several others addressed the gathering.
