Anadasangaree lands top UNESCO award

TULF President V. Anadasangaree has been designated for the 2006 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence. He will be awarded the $100,000 prize in Paris on November 16

UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura designated Anandasangaree on the recommendation of an international jury consisting Pastrana Arango, former President of Columbia, Bahia Hariri, President of the Commission for Education, Science and Culture of the Lebanese Parliament, Inder Kumar Gujral, former Prime Minister of India Sergei Marakarov and Manu Dibango, both UNESCO Artists for Peace.

Anandasangaree has contributed to raising awareness of the Tamil cause in a spirit of dialogue, while seeking to promote non-violent solutions to Sri Lanka and opposing terrorism

Mandanjeet Singh was an Indian writer and diplomat who is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. The prize is awarded once in two years and in 2004 it was awarded to Bangladeshi writer and journalist Taslima Nasreen.

When asked to comment on winning this prestigious award Anandasangaree said his ambition is to unite all democratic Tamils all over the world and he is already doing it.
