LG polls in North and East postponed again

Polls to 54 local government bodies in the North and East have been postponed again due to the prevailing situation there. The polls scheduled for September 30, 2006 have been put off for June 30, 2007, Elections Department sources said.

Commissioner Elections, Dayananda Dissanayake had taken into consideration the prevailing situation in the North and East before deciding to put off the much postponed polls there and had directed the new date be gazetted, he said

Minister Of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon yesterday said it was well known that no election can be held under the present circumstances.

On September 15, the polls chief had made inquiries from the Returning officers of the five districts in which the polls were scheduled to be held and they had reported that the situation would not permit polls in their respective districts.
