SLI - partners in UN awards
A student who exceled in education receiving an award.
The United Nations National Day which is celebrated year on year, marked this year’s 61st anniversary at a colourful awards ceremony, held to recognize and award students who excel in education from schools islandwide. The awards ceremony sponsored by Sri Lanka Insurance was held at the BMICH on the 15th October with the participation of over 1500 students from UNA study circle schools in and around Colombo.

The awards ceremony was graced by the political hierarchy of the countrys the diplomatic corps, senior Government officials, UNDP representatives and dignitaries from the various UN agencies operating in Sri Lanka. The chief guest honorable, The British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka his Excellency Dominic Chilcott – addressing the audience, emphasized on the strong relationship between the UNA and the British government. He said that the extensive initiatives carried out by the UNA have delivered positive results to Sri Lanka. He further added that the British High Commission in all ways is geared to support the UNA and would work towards strengthening the bond that has been developed over the years

In support of the United Nations initiative, Sri Lanka Insurance sponsored the Awards ceremony and awarded Trophies to students excelling in three main categories. Special awards were presented to Best Project for the International Year of Desserts and Desertification, Project of the Best Environment, Interschool Study Circles Best Teacher’s Award. These special accolades were handed out to students predominantly from UN study circles. Special prizes and certificates were handed out by the Head of Human Resource Development, Sri Lanka Insurance Mahesh Jayasinghe. Whilst congratulating the United Nations on its 61st National Day, Nalaka Godahewa – CEO of Sri Lanka Insurance said, ‘As a responsible corporate it is our duty to help strengthen the UNA in development of school education, which is the basic learning platform for any young, aspiring individual. Students are the future leaders of this country and education is an essential tool for them to acquire the right knowledge and training to develop their minds to build a suitable career and face the challenges of tomorrow.’

Mohamed Zavahir, Deputy Executive Chairman from UNA expressing their appreciation to Sri Lanka Insurance for their partnership said "We are extremely pleased to have partnered with Sri Lanka Insurance in this initiative to help uplift standard of education in Sri Lankan Schools. This event could have not been possible hadn’t Sri Lanka Insurance extended their commitment towards the corporate social responsibility which came in timely to make this a grand success.
