Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Tissa Vitharana who
had just returned after leading a delegation of all party
representatives committee to India to study the "Grama Raj"
concept" of devolution, told ‘The Island’ on Wednesday
that drawing inspiration from what they observed at grass root
level, they would discuss how they could meet the Sri Lankan
requirement. "That way we can effectively solve the national
question," he said.
"Initially our delegation met Indian Minister Mani Shanker
Aiyer and staff in New Delhi and then proceeded to Karnataka
state and then to Kerala.
"We were taken down to the village level and saw how the
benefits of the "Grama Raj" concept of devolution benefited the
people.
"We were able to speak to the village committees and get
first hand information on their experiences, problems and how
they worked them out.
"Based on our experiences we hope to discuss and work out a
localised solution that would be acceptable to all communities
in Sri Lanka and not just copy what we saw," he said.
