Police yesterday began investigations into an anonymous telephone call warning the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital to be ready with 1,500 beds.

It is suspected the LTTE is planningmayhem somewhere in the Galle District. Karapitiya is the largest hospital in the district.

The Galle Police interrogated the person who received the call while Telecom authorities launched a separate probe to ascertain the origin of the call. The call was received at the hospital’s Telephone Exchange at 7.28 a.m. yesterday.

Police believe this could have been a hoax but security at all vital installations was strengthened and security forces have been alerted.
