The government is contemplating shifting
International Workers Day celebrations to some other day instead
of first of May.
The government has focused attention on this on
a requested made by the National Trade Union Centre, the Lanka
Truth reported.
Wesak full moon Poya day this year falls on
first of May. The National Trade Union Centre has pointed out
that as Buddhists celebrate Wesak on this day it is not
appropriate to celebrate the International Workers Day on the
same day, the report said.
Labour Minister Athauda Senevirathne says that
either 28th or 29th April is appropriate for this purpose. The
Minister says that he has discussed this matter with Labour
Counsels and will take a decision after discussions with the
President.
