Police nab extortionist
Akuressa: A person who had allegedly extorted money from a number of businessmen and individuals in the south was apprehended by the Matara Police when he attempted to extort money to the tune of Rs. 250,000 from a premier watch repair and sales firm at Kotuwegoda in Matara recently.

At the time of his arrest, he had in his possession a bogus identity card as a Chief Property Confiscating Officer, Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts, with some fake rubber stamps of Chief Recovery Officer, Special Loan Recovery unit, S.P. Co-operative societies Galle, Matara and Hambantota Districts.

On interrogation by the Matara Police, it had been revealed that the suspect had cheated a number of businessmen and ordinary citizens in the South in the recent past in the same mannar under various pretexts.

The suspect was produced before the chief Magistrate, Matara, Rohan Jayawardena by the Matara Police on the directions of HQI Matara Police inspector, Upali Chandrasiri. He was remanded.
