Prof. Arulkumaran creates history


Arulkumaran

Professor S. Arulkumaran created history recently when he was elected Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St. George's Hospital Medical School, University of London. He thus became the first president of the Institute to be elected from outside the United Kingdom.

Professor Arulkumaran, who was born in 1948, is the son of the late K. Sabaratnam and Gnambikai. He was educated at Jaffna Central College and

later joined Mahajana College Telippalai. He entered the University of Ceylon and passed his MBBS with honours in 1972. He later went on to add a number degrees to his tally such as DCH (Cey), FRCOG, FRCS Ed + MD and PhD (Sing) by thesis.

He is also an Honorary Fellow of FSOGC (Canada), FACOG (America), FSCOG (Sri Lanka), FAMS (Singapore), FCPS (Pakistan), FICOG (India) and FCMSA (South Africa).

Professor Arulkumaran is also the Editor in Chief of ‘Best Practice & Research in Clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecology’ and

Associate Editor of ‘Obstetrics and Gynaecology Survey (USA)’, ‘Current Obstetrics and Gynaecology (UK)’, ‘JHK Academy of Medicine Med. Journal Obstetrics & Gynaecology (EU)’ and ‘Current opinion in O&G (USA/UK)’.

Add to all that he has to his credit over 240 International indexed articles, 125 Chapters in books and has edited/ authored 18 books.

He had earlier been Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology University of Nottingham from 1997 to 2001, Non-Executive Director of Southern Derbyshire Acute Hospital NHS Trust from 1997 to 2001, Professor 1993 to 1997 and Head 1995 to 1997 of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, National University of Singapore. FIGO Secretary General 2003-2006 and Treasurer 1997-2003.

Professor Arulkumaran is also the Vice Presidenct of Education at Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, UK.
