Governor of the Eastern Provincial Council and
acting Governor of the Northern Provincial Council Rear Admiral
Mohan Wijewickrema, introduced two separate provincial flags for
the de-merged Northern Provincial Council (NPC) and Eastern
Provincial Council (EPC) to be used in future official
functions. Wijewickrema handed over the NPC flag to its Chief
Secretary S.Rangarajah, and the EPC flag to its Chief Secretary
Herath Abeyeweera at an event held at the Governor's
Secretariat.
Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara
Tennakoon had told media: "We have unveiled two separate flags
for the Northern and Eastern provinces in terms of the Supreme
Court ruling separating the two provinces."
The Supreme Court last year ruled that the 1987
order of merging the two provinces was illegal and therefore the
two provinces must be administered separately.
Eagle, Fish and Lion symbols are in the EPC
provincial flag. Eagle symbolises Trincomalee- fish Batticaloa
and lion Amparai. EPC comprises these three districts. The new
flag for NPC has symbol SUN in middle of the flag.
