Inland Revenue eyes super rich, big businesses

... plans to rake in Rs. 330 billion

Many large scale business concerns and members of the affluent class in Colombo are evading paying taxes.

Commissioner General Wijepala told The Island that he had deployed his officials to deal with such defaulting business concerns and the super rich.

At present there were around 500,000 tax payers. The department expects a sharp rise in the numbers after the scheduled raids.

Many people living in luxury apartments in Colombo 7 were the worst culprits, he said

He pointed out about 12 massage clinics in posh areas and over 500 rich people were evading paying taxes.

Wijepala said there were also many unregistered businesses operating against the law.

The Commissioner General said he hoped to collect around Rs. 330 billions after opening more files for new tax payers and from those who have been evading paying taxes.
