Soldiers tumble in the hills
by Rukshan Razak

Defending Champions Kandy SC came up with a mesmerizing performance to annihilate Army SC as they beat them 66-3 in the inter club Caltex League rugby tournament match played amidst a packed at Nittawela yesterday.

The host led 30-3 at the breather.

Kandy earned their points off 5 goals, 5 tries, 1 penalty and 1 drop goal against a solitary penalty by the soldiers.

Lankan star and Kandy winger, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, and crack centre Fazil Marija had a terrific day out as they ensured victory for the home team by putting up a feisty attempt on the field. On the other hand the soldiers attempted to put pressure on the home team but their effort was short lived amidst some vigorous team work by the champion outfit.

Jaysinghe was instrumental in planting three tries while Marija had two break offs. The others who piled up the score line off a try for Kandy were number eight Dushantha Lewke, centre Chamara Vithanage, winger Pradeep Liyanage, full back Eranda Weerakkodi and lock forward, Sean Wijesinghe, while Nalaka Weerakkodi kicked five conversions cleanly and added three more points off a drop goal.

The soldiers had their points scored off a solitary penalty put over by full back Kapila Knowlton.

Army will now move on to visit Havelock Sports Club, while Kandy Sports Club will host Air force in their next outing.

Despite the loss in the hands of the lads from CR & FC in their previous outing the soldiers put up a good show, but in their second outing in Kandy the soldiers seemed as if they had lost their spirit amidst a set of forwards who were too heavy for them and the line that twisted their defense on regular intervals.
