JERUSALEM (AP) – A Palestinian rocket landed
near a swimming pool in the southern Israeli town of Sderot
early Sunday, killing a 36-year-old man, Israeli media said.
Eli Bin, director general of the Israeli rescue
service, said the man was wounded in the neck by shrapnel.
Israeli media reported the man died of his wounds. Hospital
officials declined comment.
The militants fired two other rockets earlier
Sunday, damaging a home in Sderot but causing no other injuries.
The rocket fire followed three overnight Israeli
strikes against Hamas targets in Gaza. No one was injured in the
airstrikes, but the ongoing violence signaled no slowdown in
more than a week of fighting.
Israel has launched dozens of targeted missile
strikes over the past 10 days that have killed 48 Palestinians
and damaged many Hamas installations in an attempt to stop Hamas
rocket fire from Gaza at Israeli border towns.
The army said Sunday that Palestinians have
fired nearly 250 rockets into Israel since May 15, killing one
woman and sending thousands of frightened Israeli residents
fleeing.
