Kingswood College managed to break their hoodoo
against St. Anthony’s College after a hard fought 29-19 win in
the Singer League inter school rugby fixture played at
Bogamabara Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
The winners earned their points off two goals
and three tries while the Antonians scored off two goals and one
try.
Superior effort by the Kingswood three quarters
ensured them a victory after two consecutive defeats against
Trinity and St. Peter’s this season.
It was Kingswood who drew first blood off winger
Chula Susantha who touched down to score an unconverted try in
mid way of the first half. They increased their lead off another
unconverted try that came off as flanker Nilantha Manoj went
over as a result of a forward charge. Kingswood led 10-0.
Just before half time, the Antonians shot back
to reduce the deficit off a goal that came from scrum half
Mohamed Riyal and fly half Roshan Wijesiri added the extra
points.
Came the second half of the game, it was
fluctuation of fortunes and Kingswood did well to capitalize on
the mistakes of the Antonians thanks to some stupendous effort
by their star studded centre Gayan Weeraratne.
Gayan scored two consecutive tries for Kingswood
and his brother and scrum half Roshan succeeded in adding the
extra points on one instance. Kingswood led 22-7. The Antonians
struck back to reduce the gap again. They cut deep into the
Kingswood defence and consequently Moahmed Fahim drilled in to
score and Wijesiri added the extra points.
Then came a charge from the centres and it was
Thilina Manoj who increased the lead for Kingswood off a try.
Kingswood led 29-14. In the dying stages of the game, Antonians
managed to reduce the score-line deficit off a Chanaka Gunaratne
try.
