TOKYO (AP) - An earthquake with a
preliminary magnitude of 5.6 jolted northern Japan on Sunday but
there was no threat of a tsunami and no injuries or damage were
reported, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake struck at 1:12 p.m. (0412 GMT ) Sunday
in Nemuro in Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s four main
islands, according to the agency.
The temblor rattled areas along Hokkaido’s
eastern coastline, as well as northern parts of Japan’s main
island of Honshu. There were no immediate reports of damage or
injuries, it said.
Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries
because it sits atop four tectonic plates.
