Monty Gopallawa was an exemplary politician

Moving a condolence motion on the late Minister, Governor Central Province and Member of Parliament for Laggala electorate in the Matale District, Monty Gopallawa Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva said Monty Gopallawa was the son of a distinguished father - the first President of the Republic of Sri Lanka and was a graduate of the University of Peradeniya.

During his academic career and political career, he proved that he was as distinguished as his family and did his utmost to help the poor of the Laggala Electorate he represented. A man of high principles and integrity he held the offices of minister and Governor Central Province with honesty and dignity.

Lakshman Kiriella (UNP) Kandy District said late Monty Gopallawa was a politician who did not earn from politics but served the people, the country and Buddhism.

Minister of Higher Education Viswa Warnapala said Monty Gopallawa who studied Western Philosophy at the Peradeniya University worked as an assistant lecturer and he was his contemporary but gave up his first career to take up politics. He said the Laggala electorate was a backward electorate worse than Mahiyangana which had many natural obstacles like jungles, rocks and rivers across it. But Monty Gopallawa had the ability and agility to serve the downtrodden Kandyan people.

Minister of Urban Development and Sacred Areas Development Dinesh Gunawardena said Monty Gopallawa worked hard to protect the cultural traditions and religion of the Kandyan people and felt their pulse and joined them in their struggles. He was an exemplary politician who followed progressive policies.
