By Cyril Wimalasurendre

KANDY The Kandy bound intercity express from Colombo Fort yesterday (18) afternoon, met with a serious mishap at a point between Galigamuwa and Gangoda Railway stations as the engine of the train proceeded towards Kandy leaving behind the carriages.

The driver of the engine who was unaware that the carriage were separated from the engine, proceeded a distance of about 1.5 kilometres.

The carriage which delinked from the engine began to move backwards causing anxiety to the passengers.

The guards on duty with the assistance of some outsiders and passengers got off the moving compartments and managed to stop the wagons moving down by placing wooden blocks and other articles on the track thus preventing a major calamity.

The driver of the engine noticing that the wagons had separated from the engine, reversed the distance of about one and a halt kilometers and re-connected the carriages.

The train then resumed journey to Kandy.
