Colombo
District Western People’s Front Parliamentarian Mano Ganeshan
yesterday said he was leaving the country temporarily as his
life was in danger.
He said there were death threats
against him and blamed the government for not taking action
on disappearances and abductions. He had questioned the Prime
Minister in Parliament about the issue but has not had any
reply, though the matter had been referred by the Premier to the
Inspector General of Police, he said.
"The abduction and disappearances of
the Tamil people was continuing and the government has not been
able to arrest this dangerous trend," he said.
Ganeshan said he had not only been
threatened with death but was also severely criticised and named
as a collaborator of the LTTE by the SLFP newspaper. After the
assassinations of a number of Tamil parliamentarians, including
Maheswaran, he felt that he would also be killed as he was a
strong critic of the government’s policies towards the Tamil
people.
He was therefore leaving the country
for his own safety while still insisting that the government
should take positive action to prevent all disappearances and
abductions of the Tamil people and to investigate and allay the
fears of the Tamil people by bringing those responsible before
the Law, Ganeshan said.
