They asked to be remanded to escape LTTE
by Dinasena Rathugamage

Due to fear of being killed or kidnapped, 119 persons from the Jaffna Peninsula have got themselves remanded to fiscal custody in 2007, through the Courts, with the help of the Human Rights Commission.

Among the remanded were nine families.

They were taken into judicial custody on the orders of Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva and are detained in three different places in the Peninsula and guarded round the clock by the Police and Army. Though they have the freedom to appear before a Court of law, and asked to be released, none of them have so far done so, official sources said.
