The Sri Lanka Tennis Association last
Sunday (Dec. 30) reappointed Vasantha Wijesekara and Dominik
Utzinger as Sri Lanka Manager and Coach respectively for next
April’s Teheran event.
The controversy began when the first
round of trials began in mid-December triggering a rift in the
National Selection Committee headed by P. S. Kumara.
Then, as ‘The Island’ last
Sunday revealed, Sri Lanka’s leading player Harshana Godamanna
said he sit out this year’s campaign if last year’s Davis Cup
officials weren’t reappointed, hinting that he was not
comfortable with the set of new officials who were likely to be
appointed by the SLTA for this year.
At the meeting held last Sunday
present were SLTA President Janaka Bogollagama, Vice Presidents,
Wijesekara, AVM Lalaka Peiris, Mjr. Gen. Seevali Wanigasekara,
Brig. Asoka Padeniya, Maxwell de Silva and Angelo Patrick, along
with the four-member Selection Committee.
Meanwhile, Rohan de Silva, last year’s
Non-Playing Captain, too, is likely to be reappointed next week
by the SLTA General Committee.
Last Sunday’s meeting also resolved to
consider two top Sri Lanka players now based in the USA,
Franklyn Emmanuel and Oshada Wijemanne, for selections, if they
play in this month’s trials held at the SLTA.
