The army made further progress on the Mannar
front over the weekend as the LTTE continued to retreat in the
face of stepped-up attacks.
Army headquarters said that troops evicted LTTE
cadres from a heavily fortified bunker line about 500 meters
south of Adampan Tank Sunday morning.
"Defenders abandoned their position after a
brief fight," a senior army spokesman said. Troops recovered two
two LTTE bodies (female) and two T 56 assault rifles.
The official said that LTTE units on Friday and
over the weekend made several attempts to break-in to the
recently captured Chettikulam area. "We thwarted their
attempts," the official said. According to him, at least four
LTTE cadres were killed and nine wounded in the confrontations
while two soldiers received injuries.
Meanwhile, troops had advanced from their
positions at Chettikulam and destroyed two LTTE trenches using
rocket propelled grenades and small arms. Monitored enemy
transmissions had revealed the death of six LTTE cadres and
injuries to ten others.
On the Weli Oya front, there had been minor
confrontations over the weekend.
On the Vavuniya front, troops killed at least
ten terrorists in separate confrontations ar Mullikulam,
