Tigers lose more ground on Mannar front

The army made further progress on the Mannar front over the weekend as the LTTE continued to retreat in the face of stepped-up attacks.

Army headquarters said that troops evicted LTTE cadres from a heavily fortified bunker line about 500 meters south of Adampan Tank Sunday morning.

"Defenders abandoned their position after a brief fight," a senior army spokesman said. Troops recovered two two LTTE bodies (female) and two T 56 assault rifles.

The official said that LTTE units on Friday and over the weekend made several attempts to break-in to the recently captured Chettikulam area. "We thwarted their attempts," the official said. According to him, at least four LTTE cadres were killed and nine wounded in the confrontations while two soldiers received injuries.

Meanwhile, troops had advanced from their positions at Chettikulam and destroyed two LTTE trenches using rocket propelled grenades and small arms. Monitored enemy transmissions had revealed the death of six LTTE cadres and injuries to ten others.

On the Weli Oya front, there had been minor confrontations over the weekend.

On the Vavuniya front, troops killed at least ten terrorists in separate confrontations ar Mullikulam, Villattikkulam and Kallikkulam over the weekend. (SF)
