arrangements were put in place for schools and school children’s
transport in the Vavuniya town and its suburbs after
intelligence services had received information that the LTTE was
planning to attack civilians in the area.
Army, Police and the National Guard have been deployed on
special duty to provide security to the school children and
patrol the town. Search operations were in place to avert any
attack from the terrorist group, Vavuniya police said yesterday
(30).
All buses transporting children were searched and baggage
including school bags, were also searched before the children
entered the schools.
Children feared to attend school in the past few days as the
LTTE had attacked a number of villages in the district with
mortar fire. Since the new security arrangements were now in
place children hane no need to be afraid, police said.
