The driver and cleaner of the container trailer, carrying a
load of high protein BT 100 biscuits to Kilinochchi arrested at
Medawachchiya police checkpoint early this week, had been
produced before the Medawachchiya Circuit Court.
Anuradhapura Magistrate and Medawachchiya Circuit Magistrate
Ruchira Weliwatte ordered the two to be remanded till February
05, police said.
The driver S. W. M. J. S. Wijesinghe is a resident of
Divulapitiya and the cleaner S. J. M. Jauawekara is a resident
of Welimada.
When they were produced before the Magistrate they had said
the 1,650 cartons, containing 39,000 high protein biscuits, were
sent by the World Food Programme for the war displaced children
in Kilinochchi, but they were unable to produce any documents
about the goods they were carrying. Medawachchiya police, who
produced them, told the Magistrate that the driver and the
cleaner did not have any documents supporting their claim.
