Retired judge for London as High Commissioner

A serving Supreme Court judge is strongly tipped to be posted as Sri Lanka’s next High Commissioner in the United Kingdom following his retirement, well informed sources said yesterday.

The serving High Commissioner, Mrs. Kshenuka Senewiratne, a career diplomat who served as Deputy High Commissioner in London prior to her present appointment, is due to complete her term shortly and return to Colombo.

The pending appointment is not expected to be formalized prior to the judge’s retirement and senior foreign ministry officials declined to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile Mr. Daya Perera, P.C. who had previously served as Sri Lanka’s ambassador to the UN will be the new High Commissioner in Ottawa, succeeding Mr. W.J.S. Karunaratne who served Secretary to President Chandrika Kumaratunga, while Mr. H.M.G.S. Palihakkara, a former foreign secretary, will be posted to the United Nations succeeding Mr. Bernard Goonatillake, a career officer.
