south of Mannar, after spotting an unattended bag at the
weekly pola located a short distance away from
the main bus stand, cautiously
opened it. When Bandara and Sgt. Ravindra Prabath found
an explosive device fitted with a timer inside,
they immediately defused it, thereby preventing a
catastrophe
There were about 2,000 traders,
and at the time the detection was
made there had been several tho-
usand people there, police said.

A grief-stricken Mangala
Samaraweera, MP, pays his last respects to his colleague
Sripathy Sooriyarachchi, MP, at Jayaratne funeral
parlour. The co-leader of dissident Mahajana party died
on Saturday afternoon when the jeep he was travelling to
Colombo from Anuradhapura veered off the road and
crashed into a tree at Medagama, Galgamuwa. Tiran Alles,
former Chairman of Airport and Aviation Services who
financially backed the move against the government is

PSC to take up ICES issue
Vijitha
Herath, Chairman of the Select Committee yesterday
said that the ICES would be investigated thoroughly. A
comprehensive inquiry was needed in view of the
charges and counter charges centred around allegations
that the NGO was promoting foreign intervention,
thereby posing a severe threat to the country’s
sovereignty. The ICES had been also accused of
financial irregularities, the JVP MP said. According
to him, the committee would summon all those who have
publicly supported the ICEC to come before the
committee to make their position clear.

As the army advanced on
LTTE positions, the LTTE, in a desperate bid to
trigger a clash near Madhu church Saturday late
afternoon fired 81 mm mortars at troops deployed south
of the church. The army said that troops had not
targeted LTTE firing position near the Madhu church.
"Had we responded to the enemy threat, the LTTE and
the media sympathetic to them would have caused a
major uproar," the army said.
