Steps have been taken by the Defence Ministry to
set up 14,913 Civil Defence Committees at Grama Niladhari
Divisions level island wide, within the next three weeks. Twenty
five District Civil Defence Committees and 322 Civil Defence
Committees of the Pradeshiya Secretary Divisions will be formed
within one month.
The Defence Ministry has instructed that the
formation of the Civil Defence Committees and the Civil Defence
Operations Committees be given priority. The ministerial
coordinator, IGP, the Commander of the Civil Defence Force, the
political leadership and the state officials of the respective
areas should be present at all meetings of the committees, the
Defence Ministry has said.
The committees at the village level have been
directed to meet weekly during the first three months of their
formation. Committees at Pradeshiya secretary Division will also
hold meetings every week while the district level committees
will meet fortnightly during the first three months of their
formation. The National Civil Defence Committee is to meet once
a month to review the progress of the committees, the Defence
Ministry has directed.
