The Supreme Court yesterday remanded nine persons in connection with illegal sand mining on the banks of the Deduru Oya in the Chilaw District. They are to be held in custody till May 5, 2008

The remandees are Sunimal Jayantha, Rupasiri Jayamanne, Lasantha Thushara, Vasantha Balasuriya, Nissanka Kapila Kumara, Chnadrasewna Siripala Silva and Pradeep Tharanga, all from the Chilaw District.

HQI Chilaw T. M. Tennekoon produced them before Court.

The Bench comprised the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, Justice Shirani Tilakawardena and Justice Andrew Somawansa.
