KOLUU –larger than life !
by Rochelle Gunaratne

Versatility is the spice of life for an extremely flamboyant persona; Koluu who is widely known in the elite circles for his scrumptious recipes, witty columns and wild and wacky drag shows will venture into the television arena soon. A programme titled ‘Koluu Larger than Life’ will be launched in April, featuring parodies, talk shows, skits, agony aunt specials and social events.

Veteran television specialist, Shehan Wijeyratne, has approached Koluu with this novel theme which is bound to attract the attention of many and keep the viewers enthralled. Koluu with his charm and witty way has amassed a fan club of sorts and this particular programme will create waves or stitches as laughter goes. Wijeyratne will direct the show.

Koluu reminisced about his favourite pastime cooking, which is a hobby he had indulged in since he was 16 years. Well, how he discovered his passion for cooking in itself is an interesting story, "My father was a journalist and many journalists used to come home for meals so I used to help my mother, who was an excellent cook to prepare the meals." This would have indeed honed his inborn talent.

As a student at the hotel school and during his stints abroad he had observed and learnt many facets of cookery. Always experimenting and producing a wide variety of dishes is a passion for Koluu, holds nothing back when he is requested to teach the art to another. The reason for the following event which is a ‘Cook Up,’ a 04 – day cookery course with a difference which will be held at the 80 Club in March. It will be for folks who want to know how to whip up ‘something fast, interesting and tasty!’

"One must love cooking if not it reflects on the meal one prepares," quipped Koluu who has been conjuring mouth-watering dishes for locals and expats for the past nine years at the Barefoot Gallery Café and lately at the 80 Club. His overseas sojourns have enabled him to keep up with current trends in the gourmet industry as well.

What about publishing a cookery book?

Well he has been trying to do so for the past four to five years but hopefully it will be a reality in 2008.

The versatile Koluu, who believes that ‘laughter is the best medicine,’ remarked on his acting and the humorous drag shows which he considers ‘great fun!’ Initially the ‘drag shows’ were a form of personal entertainment but it has gained popularity and become a permanent fixture in many events.

His other interests are listening to music (anything other than hard rock), watching TV which he considers an addiction, writing his articles for his column and most recently Yoga.

Incidentally adding on the essence of life in the present text fills him with a sense of melancholy. "People have changed so much, it is a rare occurrence for families to visit each other, go on trips let alone dine together and it is sad that people rarely have time for each other."

On what it is to be KOLUU?

"My life is an open book and I prefer that to hidden agendas, which is a nuisance. I have no malice, no animosities and I am not shy to be me!"
