Some people who were nurtured by colonial rulers
want to see Sri Lanka become another colony, Patriotic National
Movement (PNM) President Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera said.
Speaking at an event to mark the International
Mother Language Day in Colombo last week, he noted that during
the last two decades, colonial forces had been doing their
utmost to stage a cultural invasion and to destroy the national
language.
He strongly believes that language is the
vehicle of a culture and it is of great importance to protect
the national language.
Amarasekera praised Bangladesh for her
contribution when UNESCO named February 21 as the International
Mother Language Day.
He said that the elite class wanted to promote
Urdu in Bangladesh but the common Bangladeshis fought back for
their language rights and protected the Bengali language.
