Two alert policemen on Friday apprehended six
persons who had allegedly pawned fake gold jewellery at several
state banks in the South. Police also recovered several fake
bangles and Rs. 100,000 in cash.
Seeing six persons travelling in a three
wheeler, police had questioned them, a police spokesman said.
Under interrogation, the suspects had revealed that they had
been producing fake gold jewellery and pawning them for about
eight months.
They had been arrested as they were on their way
to a bank.
The police said the suspects had obtained about
Rs. 1.5 million from banks over the past several months. The
Matara Magistrate and Additional District Judge M.K.A. Peiris,
on Friday, remanded the suspects, all residents of Beliatta
police area, till February 27.
