KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Second-seeded India
defeated England by seven wickets while South Africa demolished
Bangladesh by 201 runs on Sunday to breeze through to the
semifinals of the Under-19 World Cup.
Left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdullah took 3-29 as
England staggered to 146 all out in 46 overs, losing its last
seven wickets for only 39 runs. Seamer Siddarth Kaul and
left-arm slow bowler Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets each.
Opener James Taylor's 41 provided the only
resistance to the India attack.
In reply, India went through a minor scare as
Essex off-spinner Tom Westley dismissed star batsmen Tanmay
Srivastava (22) and skipper Virat Kohli (8) in successive overs,
but reached its target in the 40th over.
But Punjab batsman Taruwar Kohli hit an unbeaten
63 to guide India to victory. He is now the tournament's leading
scorer with 207 runs in four matches.
In the other quarterfinal, South Africa captain
Wayne Parnell struck 57 off 60 balls, and took an extraordinary
6-8 with his left arm seamers.
Put in to bat first, South Africa recovered from
69-4 to make 242-8 from its 50 overs. Jonathan Vandiar made 45
and Yaseen Vallie made 28 in a 66-run fifth wicket partnership
before the 18-year-old Parnell came in to smash his
half-century.
Bangladesh was all out for 41 in the 12th over
with Nasir Hossain (17) the only batsman to reach double
figures.
Parnell's six wickets made him the tournament's
leading bowler with 14 wickets from four matches.
