DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - South Africa
captain Graeme Smith scored an unbeaten half century to lead his
team to the brink of victory on day three of the first test
against Bangladesh.
Chasing a target of 205 for victory after
bowling out Bangladesh for 182 in its second innings, South
Africa was 99-1 at tea, with Smith on 50 and Hashim Amla not out
21.
Smith brought up his 50 from 80 balls, with five
boundaries to continue South Africa's strong day three
performance, in which Jacques Kallis completed a five-wicket
haul and Mark Boucher re-claimed the world record for
wicketkeeper dismissals.
Neil McKenzie (26) was the only South Africa
batsman out, miscuing a pull shot to Habibul Bashar at square
leg, off a delivery by Shahadat Hossain.
Earlier in the day, South Africa all rounder
Kallis skittled Bangladesh's lower order and ensure his team
chased an achievable total.
Kallis took 5-30 as Bangladesh lost its final
five wickets for 34 runs.
Starting with an overnight score of 125-4,
Bangladesh added a further 23 runs before the introduction of
Kallis to the attack brought dividends in his first over as he
removed opener Junaid Siddique (74), caught behind by Boucher.
From then on, the wickets fell at regular
intervals. Fellow South African Dale Steyn next trapped Aftab
Ahmed (24) lbw in the first ball of the next over, with the
Bangladesh batsman choosing not to play a shot to a delivery
that cut back into him.
Batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (2) was caught behind
down the leg side by Boucher off a Kallis delivery, to complete
the loss of three wickets for three runs.
An inspired Kallis next clean bowled Mohammad
Rafique (14), had Mashrafe bin Mortaza (11) caught at slip, and
closed out the innings by having Shakib Al Hasan (3) caught
behind.
Boucher's four catches moved him back into the
lead for wicketkeeper dismissals with 417, one ahead of
just-retired Australian keeper Adam Gilchrist.
