Early breakthrough averts communal tension

Akkaraipattu police recently acted swiftly to thwart a wave of communal tension after the recovery of the mutilated body of a Sinhalese worker at the Norochcholai housing scheme.

The 49-year-old worker, the only Sinhalese employed at the project mooted by Minister Mrs. Ferial Ashraff was found killed last weekend.

Investigators have quickly established that he had shared a bottle of arrack with three other workers the previous day.

"Once we identified them, we took them into custody. Under interrogation, they confessed to the attack on the man," a senior police official said.

There had been an argument and one of the suspects had attacked him with a mammoty before cutting his legs, he said. The victim and the suspects had been drunk at the time of the incident. At one point the incident assumed a communal tone but swift investigation by Akkaraipattu police resulted in a quick breakthrough, he said.
