At last Cabinet has realized the importance of
ENGLISH. It has introduced English medium Advanced level classes
in 50 schools from 2008. Better late than never. We hope they
will expand the policy to cover all schools and all classes in
time to come. Once they recruit graduates and train them as
teachers, the students will be immensely benefited.
The government should have started teaching in
the ENGLISH medium not from the tail end - Advanced level, but
from the year one onwards. Universities must make it compulsory
to study ENGLISH for all undergraduates, and empower them with
proficiency in ENGLISH to face the job market in the private
sector. Universities should not produce monolingual graduates
who ask for government jobs once they get their degrees.
