Sivanesan killed in Tigers’ home and home battle

TULF leader V. Anandasangaee yesterday claimed Thursday’s claymore mine blast directed at a vehicle carrying TNA MP K. Sivanesan about two miles off Mankulam on the A 9 road had, in fact, been aimed at LTTE leaders.

He said the claymore had been fired by some LTTE cadres targeting their own leaders. However, he said it wasn’t possible to speculate who the exact target was, while emphasising the Jaffna District MP wasn’t the target.

He dismissed claims by a section of the media and the TNA that troops operating behind the LTTE lines had carried out the attack. No one would believe the army moved across 20 miles off their frontline positions to carry out a strike in the LTTE heartland, he said. If that was the case, no LTTE leader would be safe in the area under its control.

He accused TNA MPs of shedding crocodile tears for a colleague who had been most definitely killed in an LTTE attack. The LTTE had no option but give up their arms honourably and seek negotiations with the government.

"Even now it is not too late for the LTTE to call a ceasefire unilaterally and go for talks with the government," he told The Island, expressing the belief they wouldn’t sacrifice any more children to resist the ongoing army offensive in the Wanni. (SF)
